Speaker 1: Fighting drug addiction by cutting back on the production of prescription pain pills.
Doctor Michels: Last year, we saw more deaths from prescription opioids than from automobile accidents.
Host: In Indiana, one of the main drug problems is not only prescription pills, but also people getting addicted to it, and then not being able to get those pills anymore and going to hard drugs like heroin. To fight the opioid in general, the DEA is cutting back production of some pain meds like Hydrocodone.
Doctor Michels: The idea is by minimizing the overall production of these drugs, they’re going to find alternative ways to manage people’s pain, in ways that are much safer for the public.
Host: Dr. John Michels is a pain management specialist. He says, “If you really do you need the pain meds, you’ll still be able to get them.”
